Phuket Activities: Everything Worth Your Time

Phuket isn't just beaches. Phang Nga Bay is one of Thailand's most dramatic landscapes. Phi Phi Islands are a 2-hour ferry ride. The Old Town is a cultural gem most tourists skip. And if the crowds are getting to you, the Koh Yao islands are 30 minutes away and feel like a different country. Here's everything worth doing — and a few things that aren't.

Phang Nga Bay & James Bond Island

If you do one day trip from Phuket, make it this. Phang Nga Bay is a UNESCO-protected seascape of towering limestone karsts rising straight out of emerald water. You'll kayak through sea caves, float past stalactites at Panak Island, stop at James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan — the backdrop from The Man with the Golden Gun), and have lunch at the floating Muslim village of Koh Panyi.

The best tours depart from Ao Po Grand Marina on Phuket's northeast coast (30 min from Patong). Full-day tours run 1,800-3,500 THB depending on group size and boat type. Sunrise or small-group tours are worth the premium — you'll avoid the midday crush at James Bond Island. Tours typically include hotel pickup, lunch, kayak rental, and national park fees.

Bring a dry bag for your phone and wallet during kayaking — you will get wet. Reef-safe sunscreen is essential. The limestone caves can be dark — a small head torch isn't overkill if you want to see the formations properly.

Phi Phi Islands Day Trip

The Phi Phi Islands are 2 hours from Phuket by ferry, 45 minutes by speedboat. A day trip covers Maya Bay (the Leonardo DiCaprio beach, now with a daily visitor cap), Pileh Lagoon (crystal-clear swimming), Monkey Beach, Viking Cave, and Bamboo Island for snorkelling.

Speedboat tours (1,500-2,500 THB) leave early and cover more ground. Regular ferries (450 THB each way) give you time on Phi Phi Don — explore the main village, eat seafood, swim at Loh Dalum Bay, then ferry back in the afternoon. The speedboat option is better value if your time is limited; the ferry option is better if you want to explore at your own pace.

Early-morning speedboat tours reach Maya Bay before the cruise boats arrive — a completely different experience. If you're prone to motion sickness, take tablets 30 minutes before boarding. The Andaman chop can be rough, especially outside high season.

Pack your own snorkel mask — the ones provided on tours are shared and fogged. Reef shoes protect your feet at rocky landing points. And a waterproof phone case is mandatory for Pileh Lagoon photos — you're swimming in and out of the water constantly.

Diving & Snorkelling

Phuket is one of Thailand's main diving hubs. While the best dive sites are actually closer to Koh Lanta (Hin Daeng, Hin Muang), Phuket has excellent diving of its own — and more dive shops and courses than anywhere else on the Andaman coast.

Top Dive Sites from Phuket

PADI Open Water certification takes 3-4 days and costs 12,000-16,000 THB at Phuket dive shops. Rumblefish, Sea Bees, and Aussie Divers are well-regarded. Discover Scuba (1-day intro for non-certified divers) runs about 3,500-5,000 THB.

For snorkelling, the Phi Phi day trip and Phang Nga Bay kayak tours include snorkelling stops. Bring your own mask and snorkel for better quality. A rash vest protects against sun and jellyfish stings — both are real hazards in the Andaman.

Culture, Food & Old Town

Phuket Old Town

Most visitors never leave the beaches — their loss. Phuket Old Town is a beautifully preserved quarter of Sino-Portuguese shophouses, street art, independent cafes, and genuine Thai culture. Thalang Road is the main artery. Sunday Walking Street market (4pm-10pm) is the highlight: street food, local crafts, live music, and an atmosphere that beats any beach bar. Get there before 6pm for the best food stalls.

Big Buddha

The 45-metre marble Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Akenakkiri sits atop Nakkerd Hill between Chalong and Kata. Free entry (donations welcome). The 360-degree views are breathtaking. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and tour groups. The approach road is steep and winding — don't attempt it on a scooter in the rain.

Thai Cooking Classes

One of the best souvenirs you can bring home: the ability to make proper pad thai, green curry, tom yum, and mango sticky rice. Use Wise contactless to pay at market stalls — many now accept card. Most classes include a morning market visit to buy ingredients, then 3-4 hours of hands-on cooking. Prices: 1,500-3,000 THB. Book through GetYourGuide for guaranteed English-speaking instructors and hotel pickup.

Night Markets

Chillva Market (near Central Festival, Thursday-Saturday) and Naka Weekend Market (Saturday-Sunday) are the most popular. Street food, clothing, souvenirs, live music. Budget 500-800 THB for a great evening of eating. Try the pad thai, mango sticky rice, grilled pork skewers, and coconut ice cream.

Family-Friendly Activities

Elephant Sanctuaries

Several ethical no-riding sanctuaries operate near Chalong and Rawai. Elephant Jungle Sanctuary and Phuket Elephant Sanctuary are the most reputable — no hooks, no riding, no chains. Feed, walk with, and bathe the elephants. Half-day visits from 2,500-3,500 THB with hotel pickup. Book through Viator to verify ethical credentials. Avoid any operation that offers riding or has elephants performing tricks.

Splash Jungle Water Park

Near Mai Khao in the north. Good for a half-day with kids. Slides, wave pool, lazy river. Entry: 1,500-2,000 THB adults, less for children.

Phuket Aquarium

At Cape Panwa on the south coast. Small but well-maintained, with an underwater tunnel. Good for rainy days. Entry: 180 THB adults, 100 THB children.

Quiet Escapes Near Phuket

Phuket is crowded — no getting around it. If the noise, traffic, and tourist density are wearing you down, these nearby escapes are the antidote. All reachable within a day from your Phuket base.

Koh Yao Noi — 30 Minutes by Speedboat

The closest escape and the most rewarding. Speedboats from Bang Rong Pier on Phuket's east coast take 25 minutes (250-350 THB). Koh Yao Noi is a rice-farming island in Phang Nga Bay — rubber plantations, mangroves, water buffalo, and barely any tourists. Stay overnight at a boutique resort or day-trip for kayaking and cycling. The views of Phang Nga Bay's karsts from the east coast are some of the best in Thailand. A few kilometres north, Koh Yao Yai is even quieter — almost deserted beaches and total silence.

Khao Lak — 2 Hours North

A long, quiet beach town on the mainland north of Phuket. The main gateway for Similan Islands diving liveaboards. The beaches are wide, clean, and empty compared to anything on Phuket. Good restaurants, relaxed vibe, family-friendly. Minivan from Phuket: 300-500 THB via 12Go. Consider spending 2-3 nights here as part of a longer Andaman trip.

Koh Racha (Racha Yai) — 45 Minutes by Speedboat

A small island south of Phuket with crystal-clear water and excellent snorkelling. Day trips run from Chalong Pier (1,500-2,500 THB with lunch and snorkelling). The main beach (Ao Tawan Tok) has powder-white sand and the kind of water clarity Phuket itself can't match. Stay overnight at The Racha resort for the full escape.

Phang Nga Mainland — Road Trip

Rent a car (from 800 THB/day) and drive across the Sarasin Bridge to Phang Nga province on the mainland. Hot springs at Kapong, sea kayaking at Ao Phang Nga National Park, the photogenic Sa Nang Manora waterfall. Zero tourists, real Thai countryside. Combine with Koh Yao by returning via the east coast pier.

Insider Tip

If you only have time for one quiet escape, make it Koh Yao Noi. Thirty minutes from Phuket's east coast and you're in a completely different world. Bring mosquito repellent — the evening mosquitoes on the rice paddies are fierce.
